Our Families Say:
Paul,
I can’t thank you enough for the professional services you did for my father. Everything was done with so much dignity and care & professionalism, other funeral homes can’t compare! I had so many compliments from people saying that it was the nicest service they have ever seen. My many thanks to you again. You are truly the best funeral business in the area!

Paul and Staff,
We would like to share our very heart- warming personal experience we have recently had with the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home.
As our family was faced with the inevitable sadness at the loss of our loved one, Michael Welch (brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle), the support from the beginning to the end was above any expectations we could have ever imagined. The compassion and professionalism along with the presentation by the entire staff of Simpson-Gaus was amazing and truly appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this journey as smooth and worry-free as you have with such grace and dignity.
Fondly,
The Welch and Polacco Family of Michael Welch

Dear Paul & Staff - We cannot begin to express our gratitude to you for all you did to make the passing of Mom easier for us to get through. Every aspect was perfect, from making the arrangements, to making mom beautiful, to decorating with mom's things, the funeral and graveside. We will never forget your kindness and compassion during a very difficult time in our lives.
Cindy and John Belsito

Dear Paul,
Words cannot express how grateful my sister and I are for all you did for our father, Thomas Turck's, funeral. You and your staff were always professional, courteous and attentive to all of our requests. From the time that Joanne and I sat with you to discuss and finalize the details for the funeral, through the burial, you could not have made it easier for us, and your attention to detail was excellent. Our father would have appreciated all the military detail, including the Army insignia on the hearse and the presenting of the three flags at the cemetery.
Joanne and I both thank you!

Dear Paul and Staff - Jeff's passing was as much a shock for you, as for our family. Your kind, caring ways; your gentle guidance through those first few days after his death and ultimately through the calling hours and funeral - you never failed to be there when we needed you and continue to do so now. Our community is extremely fortunate to have you here to respond and assist families at such difficult times.
Joanne Fredenberg and Family

Dear Paul and Staff - When you took our choices and put them into action (I am an OCD perfectionist) I could not have orchestrated the whole process better if I had directed it myself. You went above and beyond. It was phenomenal. I mean phenomenal!!!

"Personally, I think you have really answered your true calling in life, to help us deal with the death of a loved one."
Sincerely, Terry Vinning

Paul and Staff - Thank you for all you did to make sure Harold was laid to rest with lots of love and dignity. I appreciate your kind, courteous and professional service.
Love, Dolores Leonard

Paul,
I want to thank you and the whole Simpson-Gaus team for flawlessly executing all of the elements of my mom’s funeral service. Your advice and counsel regarding each aspect of the service allowed us to choose what worked best, while adhering to traditions and family wishes. Your attention to detail allowed us to focus on the event, knowing that everything was taken care of.
This was a large relief during a very difficult few days.
Thank you again for the compassion and professionalism extended during my Mom’s final celebration.
Sincerely,
The Carubba family

Obituary

Clara “Scrappy” Lewis Yallum, 83, died on May 24, 2018. She was born in Kingston, New York to Howard and Margaret Lewis and grew up on West Chestnut Street. During her childhood, Scrappy spent a lot of time enjoying nature, playing tennis, rowing, and mingling with family friends at the Winnisook Club. She said that Winnisook was the best gift her parents ever gave her.

Scrappy graduated from Bennett College in 1955. From there she moved to California with first husband, George V. Hutton, Jr., and later returned to Kingston, where they raised their family. Scrappy served on boards, including Ulster Academy, and started a tennis boutique at Yallum’s, which later became the ladies department. After marrying second husband Robert Yallum in 1979, Scrappy studied at the Woodstock School of Art, became a painter and an art teacher both of which became life-long passions. She created the Hudson Valley Collective over 30 years ago and organized annual art shows. In addition to her love of art, she had many dogs from Happy to Bella, from NoMore to Ginger and lots and lots in between. They were her constant furry companions.

An ardent lover of the outdoors, Scrappy’s enjoyment of sports was matched only by her pleasure in delving into the fascinating secrets of nature itself—from the birds of the air to the intricacies of marine life and oceanography. But the great indoors had its attractions, too, where books, music, painting, and people were her delight.

Scrappy found beauty and joy in the unexpected, enriching many lives with her unshakable good cheer. Passionate, witty, fun, and generous, Scrappy embraced life with zest, style and humor.

Scrappy is survived by five children: Sara Hutton Schaeffer (Phillip), Paula Hutton McKinley (Michael), Andrew Hutton, Patrick Hutton (Sarah) and Suzanne Yallum, and five grandchildren: Ian Hutton Schaeffer, Eleanor Hutton McKinley, Pisut Hutton, Olivia Hutton and Emilie Hutton, many nieces and nephews, and her wonderful and wide group of friends. She is predeceased by two sisters, Margaret and Olive, and son Mark Yallum. Her beloved husband of 33 years, Robert Yallum, died in 2012.

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home 411 Albany Avenue.

Inurnment will be private.

Scrappy’s family wishes to thank her caregivers at Golden Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Friends of Historic Kingston, PO Box 3763, Kingston, NY 12402 or to the Ulster County SPCA, 20 Wiedy Road, Kingston, NY 12401.
